Shawn Boles
Shawn is a Senior Research Associate at the Oregon Research Institute and the Center on Human Development at the University of Oregon. For the past 30 years, he has served as co-investigator on a variety of research studies focused on assessing the impact of behavior change programs in public health and educational settings. His interest in sustainability issues arose in conjunction with deciding to move to Eugene from Atlanta in 1976. In looking at forecasted environmental changes as described in John McHale's book World Facts and Trends (1972) it was clear to him that Oregon would be a good place to be after the year 2000. Subsequent experiences as a member of the Eugene Budget Committee and as a City Councilor for Ward 7 (1988 -1996) made him recognize how difficult it is for a community to look beyond day-to-day issues and craft effective responses to changing conditions. He joined the Sustainability Commission in the hope that we will overcome these difficulties and generate a plan that supports acting quickly, correctly, and cooperatively as a community to address the very real social, environmental, and economic problems engendered by diminishing resources and global warming.
