ABOUT

Goals

In early 2009, the Eugene City Council adopted the goal of creating a Community Climate and Energy Action Plan. A key aim of the plan will be to reduce total, current, community-wide, fossil fuel consumption by 50% by 2030. The plan will set forth strategies to meet this goal and identify targets along the way to help us measure progress. In addition, the plan will help prepare the Eugene community for impacts resulting from climate change as well as respond to the effects of changes in energy price and supply.

Project

Through August 2010, City of Eugene staff, partner organizations, and members of the local public are working together to create a Community Climate and Energy Action Plan by:

  • identifying changes needed to reduce fossil fuel consumption, prepare the region for climate change, and prepare for reduced access to oil
  • connecting people who are already working towards solutions
  • inspiring new people to get involved
  • engaging as many people as possible in dialogue and immediate action
  • seeding public self-organization that continues long past the end of this project

Introductory Report

A brief report has been prepared outlining the central issues addressed by the plan. The six-page Issues and Options Report offers a good primer for anyone new to climate and energy issues, as well as an ongoing reference for the project and partners.

Topics

Input from the public and local experts is essential to creating a successful plan. You are invited to join in a series of public, hands-on events from October 2009 to March 2010 (see events page) to identify strategies in several important topic areas. Public events will focus on:
